In this post, I will show you how to disassemble a Lenovo Thinkpad T550, I will remove the SSD, ram, hard drive, bottom case, cooling fan and motherboard. Refer to the guide to repair, upgrade and clean your Thinkpad T550.
My target is add a NGFF SSD, a 4GB RAM, remove the 2.5″ hard drive and replace it by a 2.5″ SSD for my Thinkpad T550.
Make sure the laptop is turned off before you start to take it apart.
Unlock and remove the battery.
Remove all screws securing the bottom case.
Pry up and remove the bottom case.
Under the bottom case, we can access the hard drive, RAM memory, wireless card, SSD, heat sink and cooling fan.
Lenovo Thinkpad T550 have two RAM slots, and only installed one RAM in my laptop.
Lenovo Thinkpad T550’s wireless card and SSD, the laptop features a Sandisk 16GB SSD, Lenovo part number: 04X4456.
Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7265 WLAN, support 802.11agn, 2 x 2 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, Lenovo part number: 00JT466.
This is my new SSD and RAM, Transcend SATA3 M.2 256GB SSD, Kingston 8GB DDR3-12800 RAM.
Remove the hard drive module.
Lenovo Thinkpad T550 comes with a Seagate 500GB 7200RPM hard drive.
Samsung 840 120GB 2.5″ SSD
Remove the HDD caddy from old HDD assembly, installed it on the 2.5″ SSD.
Remove the screw securing SSD.
Installed the new 256GB SSD.
Installed the new 8GB kingston RAM memory.
